Anglo-Irish rider Dan Martin took a fine win in the hilly fifth stage of the Tour of Poland, winning the yellow jersey too. It’s his first Pro Tour win.
For me at least, Martin is one of the most intriguing riders in the bunch. His performances have at times been erratic but it helps to remember he’s only 23 and last year’s Vuelta was his first grand tour. A knowledgeable rider, he’s got a phenomenal power-weight ratio but seems to be more than a mountain specialist, given his eighth place in the Giro di Lombardia and his second overall in the Tour of Catalonia (behind the crooked Alejandro Valverde). Apparently few know where his limits are.
The Giro d’Italia didn’t go to plan for him but he’s now hitting form and should prove able to defend his lead in Poland and can approach the Vuelta with plenty of confidence.
Last I heard he's not riding the Vuelta, unfortunately.
