Christmas Quiz

It’s Christmas time and the media is full of quizzes and annual retrospectives, a fine way to pad out the content when there is little news around  to reflect on the year gone by.

Either way a lot happened in 2011 and here are 10 questions for you. Leave your answers in the comments below and the winner gets a Prendas Ciclismo calendar for 2012 featuring vintage photos from years gone by.

1. Name the two riders in the cartoon above.

2. Name the team that won the most prize money in this year’s Tour de France.

3. Name the team that won the least amount of money in this year’s Tour de France.

4. Which directeur sportif has modelled underware in the past?

5. Joaqium Rodriguez is nicknamed “purito“. What does this mean?

6. Name the rider who wore the wrong national champion’s jersey for several days during the Tour de France.

7. Which two riders scored 10 and topped the UCI’s leaked “suspicion index”?

8. What is the name of the cartoon mascot of the Giro d’Italia?

9. Which Astana rider suddenly developed career-ending back pain after Andrey Kashechkin joined the team mid-season?

10. A tie breaker: name the Belgian company I called to ask for an interview but they declined, stating they “didn’t want the publicity“.

The winner is the person with the most correct answers so if you get one right you could win and if everyone gets through and copies and pastes the first person to get all ten then I’ll pick a name using a random generator.

Of course you can steal answers from each other, half the point is to look back over some of the more curious moments of the year. The answers will appear here tomorrow.

Here’s the prize on offer:

  • Footnote: Mick and Andy from the Prendas shop in Britain kindly sent me two calendars so one is surplus and available for you to win. It’s thanks to them that the giveaway competitions started, readers earlier this year were able to win a keyring.

5.Cigar,little cigar. Purito’s nickname comes from a train when it belonged to the Manolo Saiz ONCE, which going into the mountains with Laurent Jalabert staged a simulated attack is smoking a cigar to evidence that was left of forces.
The nickname spread through the press to the point of being better known as Purito Joaquim Rodriguez as Joaquim Rodriguez.

  9. OK so the comic is Tom “the nose” Boonen, and I think Phil Gilbert.. but I can’t remember & don’t get the comic.. Is it referring to the E3 where the riders rode w/radios when they were banned? I missed it either way. BMC took the money, Radio Shack embarrassed themselves unable to stay upright. Bruyneel the underwear model sounds right, “purito” points to a petite cigar – oddly when I Google it the first in the list is the blog entry by …wait for it… Inring!!!! Does it mean “Clean”? Probably not. Grega Bole wearing the wrong jersey was an easy one, Carlos “I’ll beat you with my front wheel” Barredo & Yaro Popo were the most jacked up on the juice (so they thought), Girbecco the mascott, poor Roman Kireyev took the fall for the Astana team & we all enjoy the hand held billboards for “Dirk Hofmann Motorhomes” at the end of the stages.
That’s the sweetest calendar & I would love to have it – I wonder if they would ship to the US…..

Inring, you have one of the most interesting blogs out there.. Keep up the good work..,… and by the way , my vote for the best cycling moment of the year was Froome & Cobo… stage 17? trading leads to the top…What a great time we live in that we can pay to stream it live!!!!

  10. I was surprised how quick the correct answers arrived. And yes, I tried emailing Hofman earlier this year and got no reply. So I phoned and was told they would not welcome the publicity. Odd since they are the kings of what is termed “ambush marketing” but perhaps they did not want to discuss the tactics or admit who is involved? Somehow the mystique of Belgian mobile homes grows bigger.

As for the winner, a supercomputer (also known as the =RAND() function in Excel) picks… Ankush. Please get in touch via email.
