Cycling Podcast Reviews – Part VIII

This is part of a series of podcast reviews. Note a new episode of the NY Velocity podcast with Cyclesport’s Ed Pickering has just come out.

The Spokesmen

This is quite a clever format in that it’s a form of roundtable discussion between a varying range of participants, many of whom have familiar voices. For example, the podcast is hosted and produced by the Fredcast’s David and particpants include the likes of NY Velocity’s David Schmaltz and the Scottish Velocast duo.

But it’s a bit like a repeat of the Fredcast, only as a panel discussion rather than a one man show. The coverage of things can be a bit stale, it will discuss issues that have been in the news but often not when they are fresh. Another criticism is that the participants are usually talking to each other over the phone and so they lack the body language cues that can help liven a conversation, to be able to spot when to jump into the conversation. As such people have tendency to talk a lot for some time and the hour long chat really covers 40 minutes of content.

Still the topics are varied, you’ll get racing and advocacy side by side. But it is very US-centric. For example a discussion on racing last June talked about… the Nevada City Criterium and not the Dauphiné or Tour de Suisse.

As you might be able to tell, this isn’t for me. But if you like the Fredcast, do give this a try. I like the format, it would be good to get the Velocast boys with the Real Peloton duo.
