If sections of the Luxembourg media were announcing the arrival of Fabian Cancellara with the new Schleck “Team Luxembourg” squad, this now seems to be wishful thinking. Whilst it appears talks have been held, the Swiss rider is also linked with Team BMC, the Swiss owned squad.
It’s not just the Swiss connection. BMC is a small company but backed by billionaire Andy Rihs. BMC has ambitions for its sales and is very keen to establish itself in the US market where the brand already has a large foothold. The addition of Cancellara to Team BMC presents the squad with a golden marketing opportunity given the near-certainty of high profile wins.
Cancellara in full flight?
Whilst many have Cancellara as the nailed on favourite to win the time trial at the Worlds, as well as a candidate for the road race, it’s actually not certain the Swiss rider will even travel to Australia. Being beaten by Peter Velits suggests victory in Geelong shouldn’t be assumed. A decision on whether Cancellara flies to Australia will be taken this week.
